CANTERBURY WHEAT

Average Yield 38 Bushels Details of average wheat yields in North and MidCanterbury given by the Department of Agriculture indicate an average in North Canterbury (north of the Waimakariri river) of 34% bushels to the acre; in the Christchurch district, between the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers, of 381 bushels; and in Mid-Canterbury, between the Rakaia nd Rangitata rivers, of 40 bushels. Over the whole of the region, the average was just over 38 bushels to the acre. Final figures for South Canterbury and Marlborough are not yet available. The survey of yields made by the department involves a representative sample of growers in each country and last year figures were received for the crops of 700 farmers in the Canterbury land district. The fields superintendent of the department in Christchurch, Mr A R. Dingwall, said yesterday that the recent estimate of 44 bushels to the acre made by the Department of Statistics for the national crop this year was virtually a pre-harvest estimate made very early in the harvest. A spokesman for the Department of Statistics said that its figures were based on estimates provided by the Department of Agriculture and it would not be until later in the year that it had a verified average.
