City Of Wellington Band Retains Title

(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA. March 31. The City of Wellington Highland Pipe Band won the A grade championship for the seventh time in nine years at the Dominion championships which ended at Rotorua today.

The band was a clear leader in both the quickstep and selection. The Hamilton Caledonian Band’s drill put it ahead of the Auckland and District Band for second place, and the City of Invercargill Band was fourth. In the B grade aggregate, the Whangarei and County and Northland Regimental Band also led in both sections for the championship with Hawke's Bay Scottish runnerup. In the C grade aggregate, the City of Palmerston North Band was well in advance of its nearest rival, Masterton Fern and Thistle, by nearly 22 points. At the end of the A grade quickstep competition at Smallbone Park on Saturday, and again today, massed bands of more than 500 pipers and drummers played and marched together.
