Although only in his first year of competition, 'a junior member of the Waimairi Surf Lifesaving Club, S. Smythe, scored the major surprise at the recent national surf championships. He won the Cambian Shield, given annually to the best resuscitator at -the
championships, and was a member of the club’s four-man junior team which won the title. i Strangely enough, he was only included in the team when R. McDowell was unable to compete because of m-health. Unfortui nately, Smythe is going to 1 Auckland soon for an in- ! definite period, and he [ will not be available next i season. i ♦ * * 1 The Christchurch soccer dub. Technical Old Boys, has gained a spectacular i acquisition in a Spandshi bom goal-keeper, Antonia i Marttaes, to replace the i regular ’keeper, K. FUnt--1 ham. Although only sft Ilin. Martinez displays all the agility associated with , Continental Eoal-keeners. I His rival for the position I in the Motor team will be i another new player, K. i Clarke, from Lyttelton. ♦ * « The former Canterbury ! and Mari* hooker, K. 3. i O’Shannesaey will -play i for Auckland University I this year. An aggressive 1 and robu* forward, as well as a quick striker, O'Shannessey should be ! prominent in the livelier Auckland forward play. »«M«MmuUUMU>»IU
The top man for the Otago tennis team which played at Wilding Park last Saturday, D. V. Shaw, has the distinction of having taken N. A. Fraser, of Australia, to five sets. Winner of the national under-17 title in 1953, Shaw was ranked eighth junior that year and top the next year. In 1955 he was second to B. E. Woolf, in 1956 he won the New Zealand men's plate and that year visited Australia with a New Zealand team, giving his fine performance against Fraser. Still a competent lefthander Shaw is another New Zealand player who has not really fulfilled his early promise, mainly because of lack of competition. * * * The Canterbury soccer captain, P. Rennell, who has been transferred by his firm to Wellington, will play for Seatoun in top Wellington senior competition in toe coming season. There has been no lack of clubs wanting Rennell, whose loss to Christchurch soccer for what will probably be two years will be sadly wiiamd.
