VACANCY—MAUB UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES for A JOB WITH A DIFFERBNCE CAMPBELL AND RAOUL ISLAND EXPEDITIONS. 1983/84 APPLICATIONS are now being accepted from men interested in selection for METEOROLOGICAL STATION duties at CAMPBELL ISLAND (400 miles south of * Invercargill) and RAOUL ISLAND (600 miles ' north-east of Auckland). These islands are maintained by Civil Aviation Administration (Air Department) as Government Scientific Stations, and are inhabited only by station staff, organised as expeditions. Appointment is for about 11 months and the men selected will leave New Zealand in late October or early November. 1983, to replace the expeditions now at the two stations. Living quarters are excellent and board and lodging are free. There is a free clothing issue for Campbell Island only. Families of married appointees may not accompany them, but in addition to salaries. ATTRACTIVE ENTITLEMENTS ARE PROVIDED FOR AU. EXPEDITION STAFF as follows: CAMPBELL ISLAND: AUow- - ances, single men. £322 a year, married men. £372 a year. Furlough, three days for each complete month on the island (for broken periods) or 42 days for a year’s sojourn. RAOUL ISLAND: Allowances, single men. £l9B a year, married men. £248 a year. Furlough two days for each complete month on the island (for broken periods) or 28 days for a year's sojourn. RAOUL ISLAND 938 OFFICER IN CHARGE: (£995 a year)—to take charge of the station with a staff of nine men. Qualifications: Good personality and powers of leadership. resource and practical ability in running an isolated station. General experience required. as for Campbell Island: similar training will be given before departure. 939 RADIO TECHNICIAN: (Up to £995 a year, as merited)— maintenance of quarter-kilowatt transmitters. communication receivers. radiosonde, radiotelephone and land-line systems, and general electrical maintenance. Qualifications: Firstclass C.R.T . P.M.G. or equivalent experience. A period of training on radiosonde will be given an appointee not familiar with this equipment. 940 MECHANIC: (£l7 7s 4d a week) —maintenance of truck, tractor, farm machinery, diesel engines and generators and refrigerators. black-smithing, welding and plumbing. Qualifications: "A" grade Certificate with good diesel experience. A small, well-equipped workshop is provided. 941 COOK: (£l6 16s 8d a week) —preparation of meals for nine men six days a week: breadmaking, jams and preserves. Applicants should be prepared to undergo a cooking test. 942 FARM MANAGER: £lB 3s 4d a week rising to £l7 8s 4d subject to satisfactory service)— duties and qualifications include the milking of up to 10 cows and attending to a small flock of breeding ewes and a few dry cattle. A sound knowledge is required of shearing, dipping, killing, etc., and treatment of common stock complaints, some knowledge of poultry and home vegetable production would be an advantage. 943 HANDYMAN: £l4 15s a week)—road maintenance, and assistance as directed by the Officer in Charge, with all general labouring. Qualifications: Full experience as a bulldozer operator, and good allround practical experience. CAMPBELL ISLAND 944 OFFICER IN CHARGE: (£995 a year)—to take charge of the Station with a staff of up to 11 men. Qualifications: good personality, sound judgment, power of leadership, ability to meet any emergencies and to improvise on an isolated station; ability to control staff in such conditions and to organise work on the basis of wide practical experience. Other desirable qualifications: Medical training, radio, mechanical and building knowledge, ability to handle explosives (training along these lines will be given the selected applicant before he leaves New Zealand). 945 SENIOR lONOSPHERE OBSERVER: (up to £995 as merited) maintenance and operation of automatic multifrequency recorder and associated electronic equipment. Qualifications: First-class P.M.G. or equivalent; practical experience in servicing radio and/or electronic equipment; experience in wiring and constructing such equipment; aerial connexion and installation; academic training in radio physics desirable but not essential; ability to operate morse key desirable. Up to three months' training will be given at the Geophysical Observatory, Christchurch, before departure. 946 lONOSPHERE OBSERVER: (up to £9OB as merited)—to assist senior ionosphere observer to maintain ionosphere equipment, processing and measuring photographic ionograms; preparation of data for transmission to the Geophysical Observatory, Christchurch Qualifications: Maintenance and operating experience of radio and/or electronic equipment to lesser degree than senior ionosphere observer; knowledge of mathematics and physics to School Certificate Standard Training, as for senior ionosphere observer. 947 RADIO TECHNICIAN: (up to £995 a year as merited) —to maintain quarter-kilowatt transmitters. communication receivers. radiosonde. 1680 M.C. Radio Wind radio-telephone and land-line systems, and assist as required with diesel generators. Qualifications: First-class C.R.T.. P.M.G., or equivalent experience; practical experience in servicing generating plant. A period of training on radiosonde will be given an appointee not familiar with this equipment. 948 COOK: (£l6 16s 8d a week) —preparation of meats for up to 11 men. six days a week. Including breadmaking. Applicants should be prepared to undergo a cooking test. 949 MECHANIC / HANDYMAN: (£l6 7s 6d a week)—maintenance of mechanical equipment, diesel generating plant and a tractor; experience in the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment and a knowledge of gas welding, are desirable. 950 CARPENTER (TRADESMAN): (£l6 7s 6dl—erection of Store Building and carrying out other general maintenance work. Qualifications: Should be able to read plans and experienced in concrete work and painting.
