TEACHERS 9 COLLEGE Christchurch Two Points Behind

"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, Marell 27. Dunedin scored six points to Christchurch’s four on the first day of the inter-teachers' college summer tournament today. Wins in the women’s cricket, water polo and life-saving gave Dunedin its points. while Christchurch was successful in the swimming and rowing. Rain disrupted the tennis and cricket, but it did not prevent Dunedin scoring a resounding win by an innings and 55 runs in the womens cricket.

With the two teams so evenly matched today's programme of men's and women s softball, men's cricket, tennis and athletics, is certain to produce some keen competition. A pipe band, a haka party and cheer leaders welcomed the 130 members of the Christchurch team who arrived in Dunedin on Tuesday night. Christchurch claimed the first tournament points when it won the swimming—72-55. Heading the Christchurch team were G. le Cren. D. Eaton and Miss H. Winefield, scored an easy win in the water polo, by 10-3. Dunedin also had a deserved win in the life-saving with 154 points to Christchurch’s 140. Men’s Cricket Dunedin fought back after losing three wickets for 17 runs, to be 138 for five at the end of the day, in reply to the Christchurch first innings of 123. M. Scott and P. Thomason led the revival and were not out on 54 and 35 respectively. In the Christchurch innings, I. Simpson scored steadily for an excellent 52 B. Papps contributed a useful 26. However, few of the Christchurch batsmen showed any assurance ! against the bowling of B. O Keefe and P. Rawson. Scores: Christchurch 123 (I. Simpson 52. B. Papps 26; P. Rawson six for 44, B. O’Keefe four for 37), Dunedin 138 for five wickets (M. Scott 54 not out. P Thomason 35 not out, M Muir 18: J. Nammo two for 24. C. Davidson one for 24, P. Ware one for 58). Women's Cricket There was no doubt about Dunedin's suepriority in the women's cricket. Outstanding bowling by A. Greenwood and J. Burnside saw Christchurch bundled out for 32 and 27 H. Hyland, with 18 not out in the first innings, was the only Christchurch player to reach double figures in the match. An opening partnership of 70. between B. Buchanan (54) and J. Burnside (14). was the only thing of note in Dunedin's innings. Scores: Christchurch 32 (R. Hyland 18 not out; A. Greenwood five for 7, J. Burnside four for 14) and 27 (Greenwood four for 13. Burnside six for 13>, Dunedin 114 (B. Buchanan 54. J. Burnside 14: R. Hyland six for 23. J. Stephens three for 22). Tennis Christchurch led by four rubbers to three at the end of the day's play. Many of tlie games were closely contested, but Christchurch appeared to be the stronger side. Results (Christchurch names first):— Men’s Singles.—L. Watkins beat A. Macnab. 6-0, 6-1; R. Patchett beat B. Muntz. 6-1. 6-4. Women's Singles.—L King lost to J. Martin. 1-6, 4-6. Mixed Doubles.—Watkins and Miss King beat Macnab and Miss Martin. 6-1, 6-4; P. Tremewan and Miss R. Silke beat L. Pratt and Miss G. McKenzie. 9-7, 6-3; R. Patchett and Miss S. Griffiths lost to B. Muntz and Miss L. Ashby. 4-6, 1-6; M. Daubney and Miss B. Carson lost to P. Moffat and Mis* B. Ryan. 7-5, 2-6, 0-6. Rowing In fairly choppy water. Christchurch led from the start to score a convincing win in the rowing by about five lengths. The win was due in no small part to the work of the visiting coxswain, Barbara Richards The crews were:—Christchurch (M. Baxter, R. Ewer. J. Letts. M. Dennis: cox. B. Richards). Dunedin (M. Connell, G. Ballantyne. J. Fergusson. J. Gray: cox. A. Lovell). Christchurch runners took the first three places in the threemile road race. The placlngs were: K. Connel 1, M. Ward 2. J. Davies 3.
