The council said that the stoppage was a united protest against the Federal Govrnment and employers’ “denial of wage justice and protection against the accelerating effects of mechanisation.*' The federation earlier this year asked shipowners to increase waterside workers' wages by 7s an hour and to increase their annual leave from two to four weeks. The present hourly rate of pay is 11. 7Jd. Shipowners rejected the request and invited the federation to submit its claims to arbitration.
