EMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN

M.P. Wants Curb On Migrants (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter- Copyright) LONDON, March 13. A Conservative member of Parliament, Sir Cyril Osborne, has urged the British Government not to grant any more work permits to immigrants until Britain’s unemployed workers, now numbering about 850,000 fell below the 400.000 mark. British worker® should have first chance of jobs, he told the House of Commons. Sir Cyril Osborne has for many months campaigned for a drastic reduction in the number of immigrants allowed into Britain from African and Aslan Commonwealth countries. The Minister of Labour (Mr John Hare) replied that the Commonwealth Immigration Act. which came into force on July 1, last year, was intended to control immigration and not to stop it altogether. Far fewer people had been coming to Britain for jobs this year compared with the number before the act came into force, he said. This was partly due to the act and partly to the rise in the unemployment figures.
