Atomic Energy Conference

(N.Z^A.-lteut«r—CoppripM) TOKYO. March IS. A conference on the promotion of peaceful use* of atomic energy, attended by representatives and obaervers from 21 countries. Including Australia and New Zealand, ended m Tokyo today “confirming the conviction" that atomic energy should be used “not for destruction, but solely for the economic and social welfare of mankind.”

The conference, which began on Monday, favoured establishing regions! collaboration between countries on research and development and on problems of the peaceful use of atomic energy. A conference report noted a common desire of representatives that the International Atomic Energy Agency should be urged to strengthen its regional activities in response to the calls from the countries of this (Asia and Pacific) region, and that the agency should study the possibilities of setting up a regional office. The conference resolved that conferences on peaceful uses of atomic energy In the countries of Asia and the Pacific should be held from •■time to time” undet the auspices of the agency.
