Grand Prix Picked For High-Weight At Oamaru
Grand Prix has won two high-weights and a hurdle race this season. One of his victories on the flat was at Oamaru in January.
It is generally expected that Mr and Mrs D. B. Robinson’s Faux Tirage gelding will improve his record on the same course in the Autumn High-weight on the first day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting today.
Although he is equal topweight, with 9-9, Grand Prix seems fairly “weU in," for that is 41b less than he managed successfully in the corresponding race ait the club’s summer meeting, and only 61b more than he carried to a 16 lengths victory in the Allanton Hurdles at Wingatui the last time he raced. Grand Prix is trained at Wingatui and so is Sudd el Nil, which might be his strongest rival Sudd el Nil has not managed to win this season, but he has compiled a lengthy string of minor places and Is one of the last-start form runners in the field. Riccarton stables will put William David and Sailorman into the field. The latter won a high-weight at Washdyke in December, but his form meantime has not been encouraging. William David, last season's Oamaru Winter Cup winner, has the best all-round record of aIL It will just be a matter of whether he will be forward enough to run nearly 11 furlongs successfully after being away from racing since he finished third in the Metropolitan Handicap in November. Interlaken and Tarmine are both last start form runners from South Canterbury and Timna is another from the same district which could shape very well on reasonably firm ground.
The best of the others could be the Gore-trained Mulvey, whose record includes three high-weight wins this season. The Autumn High-weight will be one of three races for open-class horses today. The other two will be the Papakaio and Stewards’ Handicaps which will form the respective legs of the totalisator double. v Studio and Picright, from Riccarton, and the Waimatetrained Personify are generally expected to baittie it cut for first leg honours. The Papakaio Handicap field remained intact yesterday, but my Fair Lady and Brandy Gold have dropped out of the second leg, in which Page Boy, Desert Chief, and Neron are a fancied trio.
