VICEREGAL OPENING

New Intermediate School The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) will officially open the new Cobham Intermediate School, named after Viscount Cobham, on the afternon of Friday, March 22. Because of other engagements, the Governor-General and Lady Fergusson will be present for only 15 minutes, so other speeches will be made early in the afternoon and the Vice-Regal visitors will be welcomed after an adjournment. After a hymn and prayer of dedication by the Rev. D. Glenny at 2.30 pm., there will be brief speeches by the headmaster (Mr C. L. C. Griffiths), the chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr J. I. Colligan), the member of Parliament for the district (Mr H. R. Lake), the regional superintendent of education (Mr T. M. Archer), the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr A. Murray), and the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent). Sir Bernard Fergusson and Lady Fergusson will arrive at 3.25 p.m. The GovernorGeneral will perform the actual opening and the National and New Zealand Anthems will be sung.

An unusual feature of this ceremony will be the presentation by the GovernorGeneral of bundles of* certificates to leaders of each class. These will mark the enrolment of foundation pupils of the school, and one will be given later to each child.
