Ewe Market About Steady At Coalgate

The round of North and Mid-Canterbury ewe fain ended yesterday at Coalgate on a good note. Though not spectacular, the Coalgate sale was sound, with practically all classes making about late rates. A year ago the market was starting to pick up when the Coalgate fair was reached, and this meant that the fair was one of the best of the series. The result was that last year’s Coalgate fair did not show anything like the big drop in values that was characteristic of most fairs in that season. For this reason in the case of two-tooth ewes in particular yesterday values were not up quite so much as at other fairs this season, but the level of values was generally about the same.

The sale lived up to its recent reputaticn of attracting some rain. A cold wintry shower swept across the sale grounds soon after the start, but conditions improved. The fair attracted buyers from Mid and North Canterbury. and while a high percentage of the sheep was taken by farmers in the Darfleld. Sheffield, Weet Melton, and Courtenay districts, some went to Rakaia, Banks Peninsula, and Kaiapoi. The yarding totalled 11.148 head compared with 10.364 a year ago and included 2265 two-tooth ewes (2906 last year), 6085 older ewes (5756), 2162 lambs (1109), 555 wethers (553), and 81 stud Merino ewes. In odd cases sheep were not quite up to the standard of last season, but in general they were in better condition, reflecting the more favourable feed position this season.

The two-tooth ewe sale opened on a fairly cautious note but seemed to firm as it went along, and over-all values could be described as fairly steady tor the class of sheep offering. Comparison

Compered with last year, 13 pens sold yesterday made 13s more on average than sheep from the same vendors yarded last year. At most fairs this year two-tooths have shown a bigger margin than thia, but at last year's sale at Coalgate two-tooths were only about 13s down on the previous year on average in a season when drops of up to 20s were not uncommon. On balance this tended to confirm that the market was similar to other recent fairs this season. Best fine wool two-tooth ewes realised from 76s to 82s, good 60s to 70s, average 50s to 565, and others down to 455. Good Romney ewes sold from 72s to 78s, with average at 60s to 70s, and others down to 575.

Ewes in the four-year-old category sold soundly enough, with 50s or better bring paid on several occasions. Most of this age group were fine wool ewes, and the best of these made from 50s to 57s 6d, with average to good at 40s to 475, and others at 27s to 375. For eight pens sold yesterday the average was about 12s 6d better than for similar sheep sold last year, and while once again this was a more modest, advance than has generally been recorded this season, some account has to be taken of the firming trend at the dose of last season.

The pick of the Ave-year-old fine wool ewes made from 40s to 425, with average to good at 35s to 38s. and the best of the Romneys ranged from about 43s to 455, with average at 33s to 375. In thia section a selection of seven pens averaged about Ils more than comparable Sheep offered a year ago.
