PENSIONER MINERS
Assistance Requested
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March 12.
The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) told a deputation from the Auckland Miner Pensioners’ Association that he would be happy to look into the question of making available supplementary assistance to members of the association forced to make frequent visits to doctors.
The deputation comprised Mr H. Cowan, president of the association, and Mr F. Campbell, secretary. They told Mr McKay that because of the nature of his work, Social Security legislation recognised that a miner was more prone to diseases and needed to see a doctor more often than other pensioners did.
However, no allowance had been made for the increase in doctor’s fees. The deputation asked the Minister if he could review the fees charged by doctors for the treatment of miner pensioners or, alternatively, grant an addition to their pensions to cover the extra cost of the fees.
Mr McKay said he was sure that supplementary assistance was already available under the Social Security scheme but that many pensioners had not known special application could be made for it. He said he could examine the matter more closely on his return to Wellington tomorrow.
