NO ENGLISH PARK SALE
City Council’s
Plans
Although Queen Elizabeth II Park at New Brighton would be developed by the City Council as a major sports stadium, the council did not intend to dispose of English Park, said the chairman of the reserves committee (Cr. P. J. Skellerup) yesterday. When the purchase of the New Brighton Trotting Club’s course was first considered by the council last year, there was talk of financing this by selling English Park Such a move has been opposed by the Canterbury Football Association, whim uses English Park as its main ground in the winter. However, the council and its reserves committee would have to reconsider plans for the future development of English Park. Cr. Skellerup said The original expansion scheme would be modified so that English Park could be tidied up and could take its place as a small sports stadium
English Park served a purpose for soccer, softball, and cycling and the reserves committee would consider the extent of its development at its next meeting, he said
The Canterbury football Association had been offered the use of the facilities at Queen Elizabeth II Park, but had indicated that it wished to retain English Park as its headquarters, said Cr. Skellerup "If the soccer people require the use of Queen Elizabeth II Park for an international fixture, then it would certainly be made available to them,” be said Cr. Skellerup said that the reserves department's landscape gardener was working on preliminary plans for the development of Queen Elizabeth II Park.
