RACING English Sire Dominates Newmarket Sales

MELBOURNE, March 12. Progeny of England’s former champion stayer, Brioche, dominated the 164-k>t sales today on the first day of the yearling sales at Newmarket, Victoria. Brioche, winner of £15,000 in stake money (most of it in 1959 and 1980 as a three-year-old) came to Australia two years ago. His first Australian progeny are being offered at this sate-. The second and last sale day is Thursday. Mr Brian Maguire, of the Australian Bloodstock Agency, said that Brioche would be offered for sate on Friday. The Australian stud to which he was imported was about to be broken up. Mr Maguire said. . Of the 164 yeeritags offered today, 133 were sold. The Randwick trainer, E. D. Lawson. paid top price of 2200 guineas for a half-brother to Merabilly. The colt, a brown by Brioche, was the first Brioche progeny offered. A Sydney woman, who price. “Miss Loma Doone’s” and who is making a comeback to racing, paid the top price. Lawson today bought only five yearlings and spent only 5225gns ot the aggregate of 9a,73ogns. Next highest to Lawson’s purchase was ISOOgnc paid by the Sydney trainer, T. J. Smith, for a flUy by Arctic Explorer (imp) from Spring Beauty. Smith is the leading trainer in SydThe Melbourne trainer, B. Courtney, bought 14 yearlings for 12£80gns. With purchases in Brisbane and Adelaide this autumn, Courtney has bought 20 yearlings for 22,180gn5. Today was the best opening ■te dag at Newmarket since 1963. Today's aggregate was a record for a first day. The average in 1953 was 735gns when 107 yearlings sold for 78,600gn5. Today, 133 yearlings sold toe 95,730gn5, averaging almost 720gna. The record first-day sale average was 796jgns in 1947 when 94 yearlings sold for
74JMMgns. No New Zealand yearlings were offered. Most of those offered were by Australian and British sires.
