WHARF LABOUR
Short Of 250
Lyttelton is still suffering from congestion. Labour is short and 250 men were required to fill vacancies on the waterfront ait 8 era. yesterday. Vessels idle yesterday were the Kukusai Mara, Breeze. MoanuL and Picton. The Port Invercargill and the Crusader were short-manned. Apart from these vessels, the Tyrone. Poranui, River City, Kaitoke. Cymric, and Kabnai were anchored awaiting berths. The Poranui and River City obtained berths later to the day. The departure of several vessels should ease' the congestion by the week-end.
520 Too Many
The Auckland waterfront is having a slack period. The bureau officer of the Auckland Water-aiders’ Union, Mr A. Cater, 'aid that yesterday 520 union men were unable to get Jobe and on Monday more than 300 went home, according to the Press Association.
The assistant secretary of the New Zealand Port Employers* Association (Mr R J. Hughes) said the lull tills week was probably only temporary.
"Things should pick up a bit next week with the arrival of more ships from overseas,” be said.
