Water Polo Honours Well Spread

TJ ONOURS were well spread in the Canterbury Water Polo Board’s competitions this season. Beckenham won the senior contest, Wharenui the senior B and Fendalton the junior.

Led by the former New Zealand representative, R. Henry, Beckenham won the senior competition by a wide margin from its nearest rival, Spreydon. Henry retained his form to a remarkable degree and shrewdly directed the

R. HENRY attack. He received strong support from M. Scott, L. Scott, G. Dann and L. Mclntosh —all Canterbury representatives E. Tyne and M. Smart.

B. McNeilage, an old campaigner, also made several appearances for the side and showed he had lost none of his goal scoring skill. Dann and the two Scotts experienced good seasons

but there was much to be admired in the play of Mclntosh, a strong young player with a decided bent for the game. He captained the Canterbury junior team in its winning of the national championship and subsequently gained selection in the New Zealand colts side. Wharenui’s performance in winning the senior B title was an excellent one, considering that six of the eight players were juniors. Captained by a seasoned player. R. Erickson, the team lost only one game—and that by one goal—and maintained a bright style of attacking play throughout the season.

The two best forwards and the side’s leading goal scorers were I. Gunthorpe and W. Dunn, both of whom played a prominent part in the Canterbury junior team's national title win. With Mclntosh, they were rewarded with selection in the New Zealand colts side. Other members of the side were J. Kemp. L. Wilson, and a trio of brothers, P.. G. and S. Cron. In the junior contest, Fendalton scored a convincing win. It the players can be kept together. Fendalton in a year or two. should have a side able to make its mark in a higher grade. P Sturge captained the team and among his players

were two Canterbury junior representatives. B Sutherland and R. Pirie. The other members of the team were D. Clarke. J. Elliott, N. McFarlane. D. Staples and I Johnson
