CYCLING A. H. Candy Outstanding Rider, In Two Finals

The national 4000 metres pursuit champion. A. H. Candy, of Waikato, was the star of the New Zealand hard track cycling championships at Western Springs tonight, when he qualified for both the 4000 metres event and the 1000 metres tandem finals. Candy’s time in the former event was five seconds better than the second fastest, set by G. F. Wright (Wellington). Candy had teamed with W. Johnston (Waikato) to win an exciting semi-final against the Auckland combination of L. J Byers and J. U. T. Robinson in the tandem event, covering the last 220 yards in ll.fieec. R. D. Johnston and J. Bigwood (Auckland) beat the young Waikato pair, G. Grey and B. Bowden, by a half length, recording 12sec for the last 220 yards. Results were:— 1000 Metres Tandem First semi-final: W. T. Johnston and A. Candy (Auckland) beat L. J. Byers and J. U. T Robinson (Auckland) 11.6. Second semi-final: R. D. Johnstone and J. Bigwood (Auckland) beat G Grey and B.
