Union Opposes Car Parking Charges

AUCKLAND, March 8.
A lunch-hour meeting of a thousand Auckland waterside workers today unanimously opposed charges to be imposed by the Auckland Harbour Board for parking cars on three acres of land on the eastern foreshore.
The meeting asked the Port Employers’ Association to call an immediate conference to discuss the charges. The board last month approved a charge of 2s 6d a day or part of a day with a concession charge for waterfront workers’ cars of 10s a week. The charges are to take effect from next month.
The president of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr E. Isbey) said today watersiders had used the area free for years, and the sudden imposition of a charge of 10s a week was tantamount to a wage cut. Union Request
The chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr R. C. F. Savory) said tonight that waterfront users and union representatives had asked the board about three years ago to maintain parking and sug-
gested that it build car parking buildings if large areas of land became unobtainable.
Mr Savory said control and supervision of the wharf parking had become necessary. The charge to be made was small compared with city parking rates. “If we had built parking buildings they would be paying about IQs per day. not per week,” said Mr Savory.
