OVERSEAS VISIT

Schools’ Council Chairman

Mr W. J. Cartwright, with his wife, will go overseas next month to represent Lincoln College at the quinquennial congress of the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth in London, visit British universities, and tour educational institutions of the United States.

Just before Mr Cartwright goes, the Christchurch Postprimary Schools' Council (of which he has been chairman since its formation in 1949) will hold its annual election for this post. Mr Cartwright is wondering whether he should accept nomination in view of his projected absence of six months.

"I have not decided,’* he said last evening, “but I would like to see my present term out at least”

Mr Cartwright (with Mrs F. O. Bennett) is a Governor - General's nominee on the council. The Government is abolishing these seats of school governors. Individual school boards are replacing these nominees with additional parents* representatives and schools* councils are replacing them with coopted members. The present term of Mr Cartwright and Mrs Bennett will expire next March.

Mr Cartwright said he planned to continue his membership of the council at least till then.
