Society To. Seek Production
Discussions would be held with the National Film Unit on the possibility of producing a colour film of Christchurch, the annual meeting of the Christchurch Film Society decided. Mr M. B. Hayes, a vicepresident of 'the society, moved that the society’s committee should hold discussions with the National Film Unit The film would be available for screening in theatres and on television both in New Zealand and overseas. Mr Hayes mid a 13-minute film Rich as that envisaged might coot about £2OOO. ‘lf we could get Government help I think the society should contribute," he said. “Also other interests might give assistance.” Speakers from the floor of the meeting supported the proposal, and it was unanimously decided that the committee should approach the National Film Unit The president (Mr H. P. Smith) said that the society would support Asia Week, which was planned for May 18-26. A film festival on Asia would be held, with the society showing films on three or four nights. The week was intended to bring the rest of the Asian part of the world more before the people of Christchurch, Mr Smith said. The churches were also all cooperating in the week with special services. Membership of the society had been closed at 800, and there was a waiting list of 65. the annual report said. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr A. J. Gainsford; president, Mr H. P. Smith; vice-presidents, Mrs E. M. Trueman, Messrs S. Bain, W. J. Humphries, and M. B. Hayes: committee, Messrs T. H. Garbutt, R. A. Evans, H. C. Hocken, R. G. Perry, B. Douglas, R. A. Broadbelt, F. Kinvig, C. Stewart, W. Pittman, and W. R. Paterson.
