INCIDENTS IN CROWD
Bottles Thrown At Police (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. Disturbances outside a coffee bar in Victoria street in the early hours of yesterday morning were described in the Magistrate’s Court today when five men appeared on various charges. For the police, Sergeant A. Davey said that during the incident, which occurred in a crowd of about 100, bottles were thrown at the police and passing cars ,and one of the men jumped on a police seregant’s back and punched him. Before the Court were Merlin Tawa, aged 25, a timber worker; Taua Bunny McClean, aged 23, a driversalesman; Ranginui Kingi, aged 23, a butcher; Nopera Williams, aged ; 21, a workman; and Michael Thomas Eunice Hennessey, aged 23, a workman. Tawa was fined £lO for obstructing Constable G. J. Blair in the execution of his duty and a similar sum for disorderly behaviour. McClean and Kingi were each fined £lO for using obscene language. Williams, charged with assaulting Sergeant L. E. Bardwell, was fined £l5. Hennessey, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Sergeant Bardwell in the execution of his duty. Sergeant Bardwell said Hennessey struck him in the face with a closed fist and while being arrested struggled violently and kicked him severely in the right thigh. He was secured with the aid of two constables and placed ir a police van. Hennessey, represented by Mr G. Jenkins, was fined £l5. Mr J. A. Wicks, SJ»I, was on the Bench.
Skating Title.—Miss S. Djikstra, of Holland, retained her women’s world figure skating title yesterday at Certina d’Ampezzo, from Miss R. Heitzer, of Austria, and Miss N. Hassler, of France.—Certina d’Ampezzo, March 4.
