Quick CaR To Beach (N.Z. Press Aasoctattoh) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 4. The "telephone rescue” oervice <rf the Fitzrpy Surf Club, New Plymouth, proved its worth this afternoon when two -persons were rescued from a rip off the Fitzroy beach.
A young man and woman, whose names could not be obtained, were bathing a short distance off the beach when they were caught by the rip and carried about 150 yards off shore. The alarm was given by a person on the beach and the rescue siren sounded just after 3 pm. The caretaker at the Htsfoy seaside motor camp, Mr G. Coutts, at once telephoned several members of the surf club. Within a few minutes the rescue was under way. Messrs M. Dobson and L. Cleland were among the first on the scene. Mr Cleland went out on a surf ski while Mr Dobeon donned the belt and swam out with Mr Coutts operating the reel until other members of the dub arrived. Several onlookers on the beach commented on the speed with which the surf dub numbers readied the beach.
