Strikers there are isiog parades and open Mr meetings on Monday, the day a Government requisition decree—entering men to work or face fines or imprisonment—is due to take effect. But Monday is a rest day in moot pit areas and the real trial of strength is not expected until Tuesday. The strike is in support of pay claims which the miners say the Government has •'treated with contempt.” The miners want an 11 per cent, increase in wages, pensions at 50 for underground workers and at 56 for surface workers. The average wage at present is about £5B a month for . underground workers and less than £4O for surface men. The Government has offered graded increases amounting to about S per cent.
