Gap In Queue And Coins With 2s 11¾d Car Deal
Two University of Canterbury students, Mr B. Williamson and Mr B. Evans, yesterday took possession of a car offered by a Christchurch vendor for 2s Hid. Although they were not first to queue for the pre-war English car. their careful planning won it The boys from Shirley Boys’ High School who had sat and slept on the pavement from Saturday evening unfortunately lost their places in the queue when, hungry, they wandered off on Sunday morning in search of an egg breakfast. The two students took the precaution of ensuring a replacement was always in the queue if one of them wanted to leave the line. When the car seller. Mr F. Crowe, arrived yesterday at 9 am, he met with a little
coinage difficulty. Originally, he had advertised for six New Zealand pennies dated between 1919 and 1925, overlooking the fact that none were minted before 1940. He then agreed to accept equivalent English coins only to be informed by a museum expert that no English pennies were minted in 1923, 19124, or 1925. He eventually accepted pennies dated 1919, 1920, 1921 and three from 1922. The two students and some aastotante sifted several hundred coins to get those needed and the last they obtained were three farthings from a collection. The youths' mothers bed to sign the ownership papers and pay the 10s transfer fee. The Shirley schoolboys received a box of chocolates from the two students by way of a consolation.
