Ravelston Has To Survive Protest

CROMWELL, March 4.

Ravelston won the Upper Clutha Handicap, the feature race at the Cromwell Jockey Club’s meeting today, but he had to survide aprotest of alleged interference to the favourite, Sudd El Nil, which finished third.

Ravelston's rider, B. J. Anderton, was charged with causing interference to Sudd El Nil (R. J. Skelton) over the concluding stages. After an inquiry, the charge was dismissed. This event was the second leg of the double. With Stormai, winner of the Queensberry High-weight, Ravelston paid £l3 19s 6d for £l. Ravelston was top-weight with 9-1. Trained at Wingatui by H. A. and H. T. Anderton for Mr H. R. Dennis, of Southland, he was second favourite and paid £3 3s 6d. Blue Haven ran her best race for some time in finishing second ahead of the favourite Sudd Q NU. In a total double pod of £12,695 10s,'including £1590 10s on-course, Stormai carried 7624 10s tickets. Of those, 1500 were re-invested on Ravelston. Stormai scored her first success over a distance when she led practically throughout the Queensberry Highweight. The weU-aupported Corduroy appeared to have every chance but stopped badly over the final stages and had only Datary behind him at the finish. The weather was fine and the track was fast.
