ELECTION BY A.S.R.S.
“Triumph For Free Speech” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. The re-election of Mr A. E. Armstrong as secretary of the Christchurch Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was of wide signficance, the secretary of the Wellington Labourers’ Union (Mr P. M. Butler) \ said last night. “It might well have beneficial repercussions throughout the industrial and political Labour movement,” he added. The election was a triumph for free speech and the right to comment in public on the
present extraordinary policy of the Federation of Labour. “Once again the dues-paying members of the F.O.L. have demonstrated that, when allowed a secret ballot, they will condemn personal vendettas and attempts to stifle free speech,” Mr Butler said. “Published reports showed that Mr Armstrong had to run the usual gauntlet of stacked meetings, personal vilification and pressure at all levels—even reference to the Joint Council of Labour. “But the rank and file were not impressed. By their votes they have struck a significant blow against oppression and suppression,” Mr Butler added.
