Mousing Contest A cat named Boots today won the national mousing contest Boots beat 11 other cats through a glass labyryinth to a cage of white mice to win the top honours at the American Cat Fanciers’ Association meeting in Memphis, United Press International reported. Boots found the mice in 20 seconds. Hercules, placed second, took 40 seconds. Only one other cat— Bluff—completed the twisting course. The mice were not harmed.—(Memphis, Tennessee, February 24.) Mt. Cook Snow The Mount Cook region experienced its first heavy snowfall of the year on Sunday night The manager of the Hermitage (Mr L. S. Denms) said last night that the surrounding mountains had been blanketed by falls down to 4000 feet—(PA.) Poisoned By Ngaio A two-year-old girl was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital last week after eating, ngaio berries. She was discharged the same day. Collection Permits Pennits for house-to-house collections are sought by the Mount Roskill Borough Council in a remit to the Municipal Association. It says householders are “continually pestered” by collections of money and also papers, bottles, rags, and all manner of things they may be glad to be rid of, but there should be some control.

Funds For Club The Sumner Surf LifeSaving Club held its most successful annual bring-and-buy on Saturday, when £230 was raised by nearly 40 members of the dub. The treasurer (Mr W. H. Johnson) said that the club appreciated the generous support given by Sumner residents. Mclndoe Memorial As a memorial to the New Zealand-born plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald Mclndoe, a £160,000 centre to treat badly-burned people is to be built at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, Sussex, where he did much of his work, says the “Daily Telegraph.” One family alone has given £150,000 and £lO,OOO has been contributed by the Peanut Club, which raises money for the hospital. —(London, February 25.) £46,513 Tender A tender of £46,513 from Wilkins and Davies, Ltd., for mechanical services and boiler installations for the Burwood Hospital’s new boilerhouse has been accepted by the North Canterbury Hospital Board with the approval of the Health Department.

Offending Trees An amendment to the Fencing Act to give courts power to order that the cost of removing or trimming any trees (considered by the court' to be dangerous to life or property) be borne by the occupier of the land on which the tree is growing will be presented to the Municipal Association conference from East Coast bays. The movers say the cost at present must be borne by the complainant whereas the owner of the tree is the offender. Deep-Frozen Cargo Deep-frozen cargo in containers, which came ashore at Lyttelton yesterday morning, was loaded in Napier on Saturday morning. The 823 ton motor-vessel, Parera (Captain L Flavell), which left Napier at 4 pun. on Saturday had 2900 cartons of deep-frozen peas in containers aboard. Arriving at Lyttelton at 1 a.m. yesterday, the Parera began discharging at 8 a.m. The first road transport vehicle with this cargo was on its way to Christchurch by 10 a.m. Sunken Bulldozer The bulldozer which sank more than a week ago, during a subsidence of the rockfilled embankment, east of Gladstone pier. Lyttelton, is still under water. No decision has yet been made on what action will be taken. Award Presented A certificate of merit of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand was presented by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), on behalf of the society, to Mr W. F. Guy, of Emmett street. Shirley, for his part in the rescue of two schoolgirls, aged 11 and 15, at the Waikuku beach lagoon on January 11, 1962. The presentation was made at English Park during a display by girls’ marching teams. Mr Guy is an officer of the marching association and the girls rescued are members of marching teams.
