Planning Campus At Ilam
The Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr C. H. Perkins) yesterday told members of the council that this year would be important in the planning of the new campus at Dam. These were some of the projects which, he said, the council must decide:—
(1) A revised siting plan for the new campus to comprehend alterations in the lay-out of buildings,, so that reading, planting, and other programmes could be pushed ahead. (2) Action on the plans already approved for a new Students’ Union. (3) Arrangements for building a chapel at the new university. (4) Proposals for a big gymnasium. (5) Preparations for halls of residence at Ilam to be operated by the university itself.. All these projects were additional to discussions now in progress on the space requirements for the transfer of the last departments to Ilam, negotiations about grants for the next quinquennium, and other matters already under action, Mr Perkins said.
Yesterday the council set up a special committee to plan space schedules and finance tor a gymnasium. It will have representatives of the council, professorial board, and students association, with Mr A. H. Lee as chairman. The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) said he had asked the University Grants Committee about conditions for building university hostels compared with those being planned by churches but had received no reply. Action must-be taken soon if there was to be adequate hostel accommodation when the science school moved to Dam. The council will make a formal request to the University Grants Committee tor information on this point.
