GIRL OF 10 RAPED

New Brighton Assault

A girl aged 10 was raped by a man in the sandhills south of the New Brighton War Memorial early on Saturday evening. The police are stall searching for the man. The girt and her sister, aged four, had been to the pictures at New Brighton, and later had gone to the beech to paddle. They were at the water’s edge when the man approached them. He sent the younger girl away, and enticed the older one into the sandhills. About 8.10 p.m. the girt was found wandering in the streets of New Brighton by Traffic Officer D. W. Nuttra. She was very distressed, and was searching for her sister. The girl was taken to * doctor, and the police were called.

The police searched th* beach and surrounding area without success. Constable L J. Petersen and the polios dog Buck assisted in ths search. The younger sister was found in the sandhills by passers-by, and was taken to her home in another suburb.

The police search, in charge of Detective-Sergeant P. J. O’Donovan, assisted by Detective J. Phelan, continued until early yesterday, and after a short break was carried on all day yesterday.

Detectives want to interview anyone who saw th* girl with a man art New Brighton between 5.30 p.m. and 7.15 pm. The girl is of average height and is Slightly built. She has a tanned complexion and tong, straight, fair hair. She whs wearing a deep-pink, square-necked print frock with small white dice. The frock had horizontal bands with blue flowers on them, and patch pockets. Hie girl was also wearing a blue, long-sleeved cardigan, while socks, and brown shoe*. A girl aged seven was indecently assaulted by a man in the women’s convenience* in the Botanic Gardens, near the children'* playground, about 11.30 a.m. yesterday. When she was molested the girl screamed and ran to her farther, who was nearby. He rushed across to the convenience*, but the man had gone.

The police were quickly on the scene, and searched th* gardens and the adjacent area without success. There was a number of person* in the garden* at the tune.
