HORSES AND RIDING EVENTS FEATURES AT KAIKOURA

After a dull overcast early morning, the day improved for the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association's fifty, first annual show on the. South Bay Domain on Saturday and the rest of the day was fine and sunny.

Entries totalled 1484, excluding school work, compared with 1973 for the jubilee show last year and 1417 in 1961. Gate takings were also very satisfactory—£B4, compared with £ll5 for the jubilee and £75 in 1961. Always a good display of riding and jumping events, the horse and pony sections were again well supported with high over-all standard. There was also a representative selection of sheep and dairy cattle from the county and from nearby districts.

The grand parade was led by the champion Jersey bull, E. D. Dalzell's Cloverview Golden Bay, followed by the champion Jersey cow and champion dairy cow, H. J. Dalzell’s Springfarm Gold Kitty, v h c. The horses were led by the champion hack, Mrs F. F. Wilding’s Pepperpot. Mrs Wilding scored a double success with Pepperpot which was awarded both the champion hunter and champion hack ribbons. Pepperpot was champion hunter at Kaikoura last year and has an impressive record of show successes.

The supreme champion pony was Miss P. Warren’s Gaiety, which was the champion pony under 13 hands. The champion pony over 13 hands and under 14.2 hands was Miss M. Allin’s Ricky and the champion pony jumper was Graham Avery’s Tosca.

In the sheep section, there was a very good display of Romneys and Southdowns but competition was lacking in the other breed classes, although the sheep shown were typical of their breed and of good quality. In the Romney section, the champion ram was shown by L. H. H. Weavers and the ewe by C. Burrows (Culverden). Both the champion Southdown ewe and rani were shown by I. Jordan. The two Corriedale champions were from E. C. Trewin and, in the halfbred section. C. H. Rudd and Son showed the champion ram. The ewe championship was awarded to the president, Mr J. R. G. McTagigart, for his ewe lamb.

Pedigree Jersey cattle were of good quality and there was reasonable competition. The junior bull championship was awarded to F. A. Gregory’s bull calf. Grade cattle classes were not strongly contest jd. The pig section was not large but of good quality. E. B. Dalzell was awarded the championship for his boar and the champion sow, which was accompanied by a litter of 14 fine piglets, was shown by H. J. Dalzell. Results were:— SHEEP (Judge: Mr J. P.
