BOWLS First Rounds Of Champion Pairs

The Christchurch Bowling Centre’s champion-of-champions pairs tournament . began on Saturday. The sun broke through after morning cloud and conditions were very pleasant although the greens were holding a little. However, they were still taking plenty of draw. Three rounds were played and at the conclusion of the day only eight pairs had survived the three rounds.

K. Ashley and T. Coup (Kaiapoi), who were defending their title, failed to survive the third game against the Canterbury pair (N. A. Boon and J. Turpin), 20-19. It was a dour struggle throughout and with one head left to play Kaiapoi was leading, 19-18. The last head was full of excitement, with the advantage changing frequently. Ashley drew three good shots but Boon, with his last bowl, trailed the kitty away from Ashley’s bowls. Coup then played a perfect shot to trail the kitty for shot. Turpin drew very close and Coup also drew close to hold shot and a possible second. Turpin, with his last, rose to the occasion and trailed the kitty into the ditch for two shots, which gave Canterbury the game. Turpin has not figured very prominently in the bowling • world since he won two national titles in 1936 when he led for R. Haworth in the pairs and then played number two for him in the fours with success in each. This season, he has shown up in a few tournaments and seems to be producing some of his old form. Kaiapoi did not have an easy passage in its second James and W. R. Wilkinson), from Papanui (S. D. Ives and J. P. Mather), 17-16, on an extra head. Riccarton (W. McClelland and P. A. Goodwin) had a close shave in the second round when, on an extra head, it beat Mount Pleasant (F. L. Murray and L. J. Morgan), 19-18. Riccarton fell victim to its neighbouring club, Hornby (E. Jaimes and W. R. Wilkinson), in the third round, going down, 24-10. Hornby must have been very elated before it started its third game, for it had in the second eliminated the formidable Beckenham pair (J. Gibson and M. Yugovich). This pair reached the semi-finals in the national pairs championship in Christchurch last year. One of the major surprises of the day was the elimination of R.S.A. (D. P. Keane and C. L. Spearman) by the unknown Woolston W.M.C. pair (J- V. Liddell and J, B. Liddell), 22-19. After a 23-13 win in the second round over Kirwee, another family combination of K. Clinton andL. Clinton, it appeared as if it were going to treat the Liddell’s in similar fashion when R.S.A. led, 13-5, on the eighth head. On the twelfth head, R.S.A. had had its lead reduced by one, 17-10, but from then on it was Woolston W.M.C. all the way. Over the remaining heads R.S.A. could only pick up two points, while its opponents rattled its score along to win, 21-19. The game between Redcliffs (T. Wood and J. McMahon) and Christchurch (R. A. Lulham and J. R. Smith) was in the balance until the closing stages. After leading, 6-3, on the eighth head, Christchurch was behind, 10-6, on the tenth head, but it fought back to bring the score level, 10-10, on the eleventh head. ■lt was again even three heads later, 12-12. The next two heads went to Redcliffs when they led, 15-12, on the sixteenth. Redcliffs was now a spent force and Christchurch raced away over the next five heads to win, 21-15.

K. G. Murray (Opawa), who has already this season won two centre titles, the Christmas fours and the open singles, has a chance of adding another in this fixture. With his lead J. P. O’Halloran, the pair won the sec-ond-round game, 20-17, against Kaiapoi W.M.C., after having a bye in the first round. In the last game it beat Amberley, 23-18. The tournament will be continued next Saturday. Results were:—
