SOVIET SHEEP BREEDING
Threat To Merino Industry (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Feb. 24. Russian sheep breeders are challenging the supremacy of Australian breeders as the world’s best producers of Merino sheep, according to Australian wool experts. They also are placing “great importance” on wool production, both as to quality and quantity. • These are two of the main findings of an Australian study team to the Soviet Union.
Their findings are published in detail for the first time in the latest issue of the
Wood Technology and Sheep Breeding Journal. The four-man team made a three week survey of sheep and wool production in the Soviet Union in August, 1960, at the invitation of the Soviet Government. During the visit they assessed the standard reached by the Merino section of the industry and gauged Russia's possible future competition of the international market.
