AVALANCHE ON GLACIER

Woman Injured

At Fox

(NZ Press Association) HOKITIKA, Feb. 21. A ski-equipped Cessna plane made a flare-path landing at Hokitika airport at 8.45 pan. today with a young woman who had been injured at the Fox Glacier at 3 pan.

The woman. Miss Breda Long, was a member of a party of seven, under Guide M. Bassett, of Fox Glacier, on an inspection of the glacier when a freak movement in the glacier dislodged thousands of tons of ice from the face of the glacier and sent it crashing into the lake.

“The resultant spray of ice, rocks, and water caught us and knocked us to the ground, the young woman receiving a broken leg when she was struck by a roek,” Mr Bas : sett said tonight “We were all very lucky. We were on the normal approach to the glacier where we always go. Even on wet days it is a safe spot from which to view the terminal face,” he added. Mr Bassett returned to the Fox Glacier Hotel, and a stretcher party made a quick trip back to the glacier. The injured woman was later admitted to the Greymouth Hospital. Other members of the party were struck by flying ice and rocks and suffered cuts and bruises. They were treated at the Fox Glacier.
