A New Zealand Knk with America's defence programme is being provided by Mr O. S. Olds, who has become vice-pressdent ot the Ry» Aerooaixacfa Oompanff of California. Bom fa Dunedin fa 1921, Mr Olds went to the United States with his parents at the age of five.
Mr Olds is the son of Mr E. H Olds formerly a wellknown professional swimming coach who founded the Kiwi dub fa Dunedin and went to the United States as the first coach at the San Diego Swimming Club. Mr O. S. Oids graduated from the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena fa 1944 and then studied servomechanism design, character transmitters, end electronic
measurement with Allis. Ch aimers. He was celled in to work on the Manhatten project for the development of the atomic bomb (for which he received the Secretary of War’s special citation fa 1945) and was engaged fa study of early beftatdXMM for nuclear re•earch. In 1946 he joined the Ryan company to originate end develop the radar guidance systems on the Fire, bird, one at the first adr-to. eir guided missiles ot the United States Aar Force. Recently Mr Olds has been engaged mainly in the development of conftinuous-
wave Dcppder navigation system, which are the most advanced form of aerial navigation. Other work has included the development of radar and electronic systems for application fa anti-sub-ma nine warfare, airborne early warning systems, serial minelaying, and missiles. Mr Olds holds a San Deigo Chamber of Commerce eward for the most outstanding technical achievement fa aviation.
