DEXTER DENIES REPORT

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. The suggestion that he believed that the Ashes should be discarded and that a better result would be obtained by offering the players £lOOO to win was “totally incorrect,” said E. R. Dexter, captain of the M.C.C. side which arrived in Auckland this evening. After a press conference following the drawn fifth test at Sydney on Wednesday Dexter was reported as saying: “If there were no' Ashes and

£lOOO a man to win I think there might have been a better result.” This, said Dexter tonight, was a “misquotation and was really too ridiculous.” The remark was made in the middle of a discussion on the effect of the Ashes. “The subject of money cropped up and I made a light-hearted remark about ft. I did not make that statement. It is quite incorrect,” said Dexter.
