TROTTING Grouse Picked To Win £l400 Wellington Cup

Grouse could be the best of a bracket of five horses which are expected to dominate the £I4OO Wellington Cup at die Hutt Park Raceway tomorrow night. This race, the first leg of die double, is the main event on the first night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting.

Grouse, which will be bracketed with Cairnbrae, Urrall, Falsehood and Gildirect, met trouble at die start of her race at the Royal meeting at Hutt Park and broke. However, she gave a dashing display at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday, and if she does as well again she will be hard to head. :.

Grouse drew No. 1 at the triato and began splendidly Joe K P. Nyhan. She has the same barrier draw at Hutt Park and should again begin smoothly. She i* a splendid front-runner. Cairnbrae is unbeaten in his five starts since joining C S. Donald’s team and he must be given a great chance, as also must Urrsil, runner-up to Falsehood on foe course last week. Falsehood and GUdirect were first and third respectively in the Qnroin TOirshrth Handicap. If all membet* of the bracket show their beet form, they should fill at least three at the first five plantings Lordship is the backmarker on 30 yards. He has bed a chapce to freshen up since be raced at Fcrbury Park on February 2. The brilliant four-year-old wiH not be set an easy task in this field, but favoured with a reasonable run, he should be hard to beat. v

The chances at the others earning any of the stake seem remote. The pick of them could be Master Alan Mid Gay Reel. Peel, whcih will be making a fresh start, is selected to win the second leg, the two-mde Carterton Handicap. Peel won his heat of

; the free-for-all at the Ash- , burton trial*, and the stablemate of Grouse seems ready 1 to give a good account of I himself. i Direct Tenn* was a runaway winner over 10 furlongs at Blenheim on February 9. The extra distance , should not worry him, and ; he may be the hardest for I Peel to beat. IlMindecboit, Goidpeen, and ' Affiliate appeal meet of the others. ■ Field* for the double* race* . are:—
