Heavy Passings Of Flock Rams At Ashburton Fair
Big entries and heavy passings again characterised the mutton breeds section of the annual stud and flock ram fair held by the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association at Ashburton yesterday. More than half the flock Southdown, English Leicester and Border Leicester entries were passed but there was a good demand for South-Dorset Downs, South Suffolks, Ryelands and crossbred rams.
Top prices for flock rams were generally lower than at last year’s fair but in the stud section the top price for the day was 10 guineas higher than last year. In general, the standard of the sheep offered was not as high as in recent years. Good quality flock rams from well-known breeders were in demand but there was no interest in rams that were not brought out well or were not true to type.
Top price at the sale of 70gns was again paid for a one-shear stud Southdown ram offered by Mr C. A. Adams, of Greendale, Christchurch. The ram was purchased by McClure Bros. (Killinchy).
This is the third Ashburton sale in succession that Mr Adams has topped. Last year his Southdown ram fetched 60gns, and in the previous year another fetched 65gns. Only two of 13 rams offered in the Border Leicester stud ram section found buyers, but the prices paid were 2gns higher than the highest paid last year. Keen interest was shotftn in the stud Southdown section, which met a better response than last year. The average price was 36}gns, but of the 16 rams offered 10 were passed in. None of the registered ewes interested the gallery, and all pens were passed in. Flock Runs The Southdown flock ram market was over-supplied again this year with only 541 head of the yarding of 1033 sheep finding a buyer under the hammer. Many of the passed lots did not get beyond the upset price, although big. good quality sheep found a market, with keen competition and satisfactory prices. The gallery which followed the sale was not large, and it took little interest in the lesser quality pens. Interest waned in the latter stages. Top price of 29jgns was paid for a one-shear ram entered by D. N. Campion (Rakaia), who also received 20gns. C. A. Adams was paid 23gns. Block Border Leicesters met a poor sale. Of the 146 pens offered 121 were passed in and only 25 pens were sold. Some pens attracted no interest at all, although good pens met spirited bidding. Top price of 9jgns was paid for a one-shear ram offered by the Longnewton Trust.
Only three out of 22 pens of English Leicesters found buyers, with the top price of 9gns being paid for two one-shear rams from Bennett Bros. (Riverside).
South-Dorset Down met an exceptionally good sale, with all 10 pens selling. The average price was Just under 17gns, and prices ranged from 14gns upwards. A one-shear ram entered by H. M. King (Ashburton) fetched the highest price of 22gns. After a quiet beginning, the demand for South Suffolks improved, and in general prices were higher than those paid at last year’s fair. However, the top price of ISgns for four oneshear rams offered by A. Amos and Sons (Wakanui) was one guinea lower than last year’s top price.
All three pens of Ryeland were sold, with the top price being Sgns , Crossbred Rams Smaller entries in the crossbred rams section meant that pens met a sound sale. Of a total of 77 pens offered in the five different breeds, only 15 were passed. Only 12 pens of 82 offered of Southdown-Border Leicesters were pasaed in. Top price was 16gn«. Two one-shear HampshlreSouthdown rams entered by W. J. Bell (Ashburton) fetched ISgns. Sales made were:— STUD RAMS Border Leicesters I. (Trevor Thomas and Company sold, on account of:— A. T.
