Magistrate’s Court Youth Refuses Legal Aid On Attempted Theft Charge

An 18-year-old youth, who appeared before Mr A. P. Blair, S.M, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of attempted theft, refused to accept legal aid arranged by his mother who lives in Wellington. The youth, Edwin Norman Bell was jointly charged with James Aaron Cook, aged 19, of attempting to steal half a gallon of petrol from * car in Linwood avenue on February 18. Both pleaded guilty. When the case was called, Mr G. R. Lascelles said he had been asked at short notice to appear on behalf of Bell and applied for a remand until this morning to enable his mother to arrive from Wellington. Bell: I object.

Magistrate: Don’t you want a solicitor? You are entitled to make your own choice, but you should be guided by your mother's wishes.

Bell replied that he wanted the matter cleared up as he and Cook were on their way to Nelson to start tobaccopicking jobs. The Magistrate said Mr Lascelles would have to accept Bell’s wish not to have legal aid, and after hearing the evidence, remanded both the accused in custody until Friday for a probation officer’s report and sentence.

Cook: But please sir, we must get to Nelson for our jobs.

Bell: Yes sir, we would have left half a dollar for the petrol "A very unlikely story,” said the Magistrate as the defendants left the dock. THEFT OF RADIO
