Bowls OPEN PAIRS TOURNEY

Hickman-Dale In Final

At the completion of four rounds on Saturday there were only two pairs left in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s open men’s pairs tournament— R. Rossiter and J. Dale (Burwood) and W. Bowman and S. Hickman (Sydenham). Before play commenced there were 10 fours with one life and one with two lives. The two-lifer, J. Hewitson and R. Hewitt (South Brighton), were eliminated in the last two rounds of the day. In both games, Hewitt resorted to indiscriminate driving with all three bowls, which is always fatal in singles and pairs. In both games he lost he was up against old campaigners, who were quite content to draw and let Hewitt drive himself out of the games. T. J. Edmonds (St. Albans), who had played well throughout the tournament had a hard game against Hewitt in the second round and only went down 16-15. This loss eliminated him from the tournament. Two prominent skips, R. Lulham (Christchurch) and M. Yugovlch (Beckenham), clashed in the first game and in a good struggle Christchurch won, 20-16.

Another battle of giants was seen between Dale and H. Deavoll (Sydenham). Dale held the advantage and ran out the winner, 17-10. The final will be played at a date yet to be decided. Much will depend on how far Dale goes in the champion of chambions event, which commences next Saturday. Results were:— Ninth Round Two-lifer: R. Hewitt (South Brighton) a bye. One-lifers: T. J. Edmonds (St. Albans) 23, Barnard (Spreydon) 10; R. Pirrie (Dallington) 18, Wilkinson (Hornby) 16: J. Dale (Burwood) 17. H. Deavoll (Sydenham) 10: R. Lulham (Christ--hurch) 20. M. Yugovich (Beckenham) 16: S. Hickman 'Sydenham) 18. Coup (Kaiapoi) Tenth Round Hewitt (two-lifer) 16. Edmonds (one-lifer) 15. Onelifers: Dale 17. Pirrie 9: Hiekman 22. Lulham 10. Eleventh Round Dale (one-lifer) 27. Hewitt 'two-lifer) 24; Hickman (onelifer) a bye. Twelfth Round Hickman 22, Hewitt 13. Dale a bye. Cyclist Injured.—When his cycle ran into the back of a parked car about 9.40 p.m. on Saturday, David Archibald Smith, of 31 Huxley street, suffered head injuries. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital.
