ATHLETICS Nine Records On Final Day Of Championships

Nine Canterbury records, in six events; some near records; and close contests sustained interest in the final day of the Canterbury athletic championships at Rugby Park on Saturday.

This made 16 records for the two-day meeting, but as on the first day not all the record performances from Saturday will be approved.

Conditions were favourable, especially for the sprints, where wind assistance wifi prevent the recognition of some times as records. Again it was the lower age competitors who provided most of the record breaking.

With a record equalling time ot B.teec. 13-year-old Mias K. A. OnovweU, ot Westpost, adsded through the senior women’s 75 yards to give the Hmpire Games representative, Mias M. A. M. Chamberlain, her first championship defeat at the distance since first winning the title in 1567. Mbs Chamberlain was not the title holder, however, as she was unable to compete last year when she was representing New Zealand against New South Wales. In the ghte under 17 220 yaoda—a new event on the programme the record standard ot 27aec fell in the first heat to Mies F. Lassen (Toe H) who scampered
