Softball Umpire Sends Team Off

(NJZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Feb. 17. The Cornwall major grade softball team was ordered from the field during its match in the Auckland championship against Marist at Blandford Park on Saturday. Cornwall was sent off by the umpire. Mr S. Day, during the bottom of the sixth Innings. Marist. which was batting, was two men down and led 8-9 at this stage. Mr Day first sent the Cornwall third baseman. W. Oliver, off the field after an exchange of words. A few seconds later, as Oliver was walking off. Mr Day sent the Cornwall team from the field. He had awarded the match to Marist. he said later. The Auckland executive committee will hold an inquiry Into the matter tomorrow night. The Cornwall coach, Mr D Lyons, said Cornwall would not protest over the Incident.

It was the first time a team has been ordered off in Auckland softball. Marist and Cornwall will meet again tomorrow in a promotion-relegation fixture.

Richmond Beat Linwood

In cool, overcast weather, ideal softball conditions, Richmond took what could be a decisive step towards the men’s senior championships by narrowly defeating Linwood on Saturday. Results:—Richmond 4. Linwood 3; Papanul 10, United 3; Christchurch 8. Western Suburbs 5; Spreydon 7, Kalapoi 2.
