The Spring Is Still There

FTHE former British OiyrnA pic and 1960 English Empire Games representative, P. Wells, made a welcome return to Canterbury high jump championships ait Rugby Park on Saturday. In winning the title with 6ft 2in. Wells cleared

the best height recorded for the title since he “retired" from competition at the end of the 1956 season, when he won the national title with 6ft 5 in. Also a New Zealand Games representative, Wells dominated the national high jump scene from 1951 to 1958, missing the national title only in 1962, when he returned to Eng* land to qualify for the British Olympic team for Helsinki.

Wells will make the task of the defending national champion, M. Jeffries (Auckland) a difficult one.

The Canterbury champion has a fine competitive temperament and he has the added advantage of having beaten the Aucklander in all their clashes at national meetings. Wells can be expected to improve by art least another couple of inches tor the national meeting in Dunedin on March 1 and 2, provided conditions are fovourafole.
