SLIPE WOOL RESEARCH
ork Planned In NX
Kierrti into improved methods of handling wool in the freezing works is to be undertaken by the Wool Research Organisation with the assistance of the Leather and Shoe Research Association. The Wool Research Organisation will provide staff and the Leather and Shoe Research Association advice and accommodation in its Wellington premises at least until the Wool Research Organisation’s own laboratories are built at Lincoln. About one-seventh of New Zealand's wool clip is prepared for the market by the freezing companies. It is pulled from sheep skins after they are painted with special paints known as depilatories. Of the major wool-producing countries New Zealand has the largest fraction of wool treated in this way. The first objective of the research is the improvement of depilatory paints. The present ones are dark in colour, and it is impossible to avoid some straying of the paint, which stains the wool and weakens it A high-calibre chemist with research experience in organic or biochemistry is being sought to undertake the project. The director of the Wool Research Organisation (Mr N. F. Roberts) said yesterday that he was seeking graduates either in New Zealand or abroad who might be interested in this position and he hoped it would be possible to make an appointment early next month.
