AWARDS TO PLAYERS
The leading batsman and bowler of the Rothmans’ cricket tournament which ends today will each receive a trophy at the closing function. The trophies will be miniature bats Inscribed with the autographs of 33 former English players and those of the 1961 Australian tourists. The signatures were inscribed on a fullsize bat at a reception held by Rothmans'. Ltd., in the Lord’s Tavern on July 24. 1961, and represents 737 test match appearances.
The former test players ranged in age from S. F. Barnes, who is 90 in April, to 35-year-old J. J. Warr. Other men present who figure prominently in the record books in? eluded Wilfred Rhodes, the coholder of the English test record partnerships for both the first and the tenth wickets; Sir J. B. Hobbs, who scored a record 197 centuries in first-class cricket; and P. G. H. Fender, the former Surrey captain, who hit a century in 35 minutes—a world record for first-class cricket. Recently retired players Included T. G. Evans, D. C. S. Compton, A. V. Bedser. and J. C. Laker (who made a comeback for Essex last season as an amateur).
