MOY, KEY AND NELL TOP FANCIES

Royal Meeting At Riccarton

The public has probably settled for Great Sensation and Key for favouritism in the major races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Royal meeting at Riccarton tomorrow.

Great Sensation will be try ing for the twenty-first win of his remarkable career in the £4OOO Queen Elizabeth II Handicap. Key, six years Great Sensation’s junior, will attempt a top-weight’s victory in the £3OOO Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.

There is material in the Queen Elizabeth II Handicap field for a race to fit the occasion. With a full-sized field, there will probably be a strong early pace while the search for advantageous positions goes on.

Free-running light-weights should keep the pace lively out in front, and the situation and the roomy course should suit the strong stayers that will be ridden from the ruck near the end. A Great Sensation victory could spark off a popular demonstration to match the one a big Trentham crowd gave the old Cassock gelding after his third Wellington Cup victory last month. North Island gallopers have made some spectacular raids on Riccarton, and Key is one of several good performers to represent northern •tables tomorrow. Another one is Moy. a highranking mare from Hastings, which is engaged in the Queen Elizabeth II Handicap. Then there is Nell, a brilliant graduate from hacks with two wins at the Wellington Cup meeting, and a fancied candidate for the Windsor Castle Handicap, the second leg of tomorrow’s double. Nell is one of two North Island sprinters engaged in this £lOOO race. The Knight’s Romance filly is prepared at Trentham by W. D Wylie, a newcomer to the trainers’ ranks.
