AMPHIBIAN DAMAGED

(NJ!. Press

AUCKLAND, February 13. The pilot and a passenger were uninjured when a Grumman-Widgeon amphibian aircraft crash-landed at Whenuapai Airport about 1 p.m. today.

The pilot was Captain Glenn Ridgeway, of Tourist Air Travel, Ltd., the manag-ing-director of which. Captain F. P. Ladd, piloted the Duke of Edinburgh today. Faulty port wheel hydraulic gear caused the mishap when it failed to retract properly as the aircraft took off from Long Beach, west of Russell. During the flight the pilot tried to retract the wheels without success and he headed for Whenuapai instead of the usual landing place in Mechanics Bay. An R.N.Z.A.F. Vampire escorted the amphibian, and fire and ambulance crews were alerted.
