Gliding ARGENTINE EVENTS

Pilots From 23 Countries (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) JUNIN (Argentina), Feb. 11 Glider pilots from 23 countries took off today for the first event to the 14-day world gliding championships. It was a fixed objective race to thf town of Mercedes, 141.2 kilometres east of Junin. The launchings were made at an airfield on the outskirts of Junto, deep to the heart of the Argentine grain and livestock growing known as the pampas. Thermal currents registered a velocity of two to three and a half metres a second, clouds were up to 800 metres and the maximum temperature forecast was 28 degrees Centigrade. F. Henry, of France, and H. Huth, of West Germany, won the first event today, according to unofficial results.

Countries participating Include Australia, Canada, the United States, France, and Great Britain.
