Sales Yesterday In Australia (NJS. Press Asm.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 11. The Melbourne Wcoibrokers’ Association today reported a 98 per cent clearance of 14.398 bales from all parts of Victoria. Competition, they said, was general and animated, with Japan again the chief buyer Useful support came from the Continent and the United Kingdom. Yesterday’s rates for Merinos and crossbreds were fully maintained, while faulty comebacks were slightly in buyers’ favour. Cleans were unchanged. The Goulburu Wool Brokers’ Association today reported an almost total clearance of 5850 bales. The brokers reported keen, widespread buying by Japan, and Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom. Compared with the Sydney closing rate last week, today’s market was fully firm on all descriptions. Newcastle Sale At the Newcastle sale there was good competition from Japan, the Continent and the United Kingdom and an almost total clearance of 13,631 bales. Compared with the closing rates last week in Sydney, today’s Newcastle market generally was unchanged for all Merino fleece wools. Merino skirtings showed some irregularity and rates were par to 2J per cent, lower. Comebacks and crossbreds were firm.
