Franz Josef Hotel
Sir, —Although the terminal faces of the Franz, Fox, and Tasman glaciers have receded somewhat during the last 20 years, “CJH.T.’s” assertion that the Franz “has receded almost out of sight” is a gross exaggeration. There is still a good five males of glacier in plain view. Guided tourist parties are taken on the white ice every day; my wife and children made this trip—highlight of the holiday —only two w-eeks ago. The case for rebuilding the Franz Josef Hotel, however, rests not only on its undeniable value as a convenient base for tourists and travellers, but also on the increased tirade and commerce which a goodsized hotel would bring to the Franz Josef area and to Westland as a whole. Money spent in the Franz Josef would be a sound economic investment in the resources of the people and province of Westland.—Yours, etc, FjC, •February 11, 1963.
