Spraying Of Wheat
Sir,—l read with ccmcem in your issue of February 2 an article blaming aerial spraying for poisoning a horse and making a family ill The spray was for pests on a wheat crop. Is the wheat from this crop tested before being turned into flour for human consumption? My guess is that it is not, and perhaps this could be the cause of a lot of sickness.— Yours, etc, VERY WORRIED.
February 7, 1963. [The director ot the Wheat Research Institute (Mr E. W. Hullett) comments: "We have found no evidence of insecticide contamination of wheat grain after spraying of standing crops in. a series of experiments begun in 1960 and still in progress. The methods of analysis used are extremely sensitive. The work is being carried out in collaboration with the Health Department, the Department of Agriculture, and the Crop Research Division and the Dominion Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The results agree with overseas findings, but in view of the importance of the topic it was considered prudent to carry ou t further work in this country.”]
